A web designer in India in 2026 charges ₹9,000 to ₹30,000 for a small business site, and ₹40,000 or more when the scope includes content, a catalogue, or custom sections. The number that matters is not the design fee. It is whether the quote ends at a design file or at a working website.
Most Indian small businesses are quoted a design-and-build price, even when the word “design” is doing all the work in the conversation. This page separates the two so you can compare quotes properly.
Design-only, design and build, or retainer
Three different products get sold as “web design”. Design-only means layouts and brand styling delivered as files or a Figma link, and the build is someone else’s job. It is rare in the SME market, because most buyers do not have a developer waiting.
Design and build is what a small business usually buys, whatever the invoice calls it. The designer also builds the site, connects the form, sets up hosting, and hands over the code.
A retainer buys ongoing design work and updates for a monthly fee, worth paying once the site is live and being tested, not before.
Ask which of the three the quote covers. A ₹12,000 design-only quote buys less than a ₹25,000 design-and-build quote, because it is a different product with the expensive half taken out.
What the numbers look like
| Scope | What you get | Typical quote |
|---|---|---|
| Single landing page | One page, form, WhatsApp, mobile layout | ₹7,999 to ₹15,000 |
| Small business site | 3 to 6 pages, content structure, basic SEO | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 |
| Custom design, larger scope | 8+ pages, custom sections, integrations | ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
| Retainer | Updates, new pages, campaign pages | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 / month |
The lower ends are freelancers and small studios; the upper ends are agencies with overhead. Our own packages sit at the lower end, ₹7,999 to ₹34,999, and every one includes the build rather than only the design. See pricing.

Why the same design costs ₹9,000 and ₹90,000

Chat on WhatsAppSee pricingFour things move the price, and none of them is talent.
A purchased theme retails for about ₹3,000 and takes an afternoon to install, while a custom layout takes days. Both can look professional in a screenshot, and only the custom one grows past the pages the theme shipped with. Content moves the number more than most buyers expect, because writing five pages of clear copy takes longer than designing them, so a quote that excludes content is cheaper simply because the work moves to you.
Then come the states and devices. A design covers the mobile layout, the empty form, the error message and the long product name, along with the 320px screen. Designers who price the states charge more and deliver something that survives real content.
The build is the fourth. Responsive code takes real time, so does a working form, and so does the deploy, which leaves the design file sitting at the halfway point of the job.
So a ₹90,000 quote for a five-page site is not automatically a rip-off, and a ₹9,000 quote is not automatically a bargain. The question is what sits in the scope, in writing.
What a design invoice should itemise
Before you pay, the quote should name the page list: Home, About, Services, Contact, plus any catalogue or landing pages. It should also fix the revision rounds, and two is normal. “Unlimited revisions” is a scope with no end and usually means no real feedback loop.
Next, who writes the content: you, them, or a copywriter they bring in. Then what gets handed over, meaning source code, repository access, the design files, and the domain and hosting account. And what happens after launch. That last one covers the support window and the maintenance cost, and it should say who fixes a broken form.
If those five are missing, the price is a guess and the delivery date is a wish.
Cheaper paths and where they stop
A website builder costs ₹0 to ₹2,000 per month and goes live in a weekend. What it cannot do is hand you the code or give you speed control, and it stops dead at any layout the builder does not offer.
A purchased theme costs ₹3,000 plus setup. It stops when you need a page the theme does not have, or a redesign that is more than a colour change.
An AI-generated page costs nothing and is fast, which makes it a decent first draft. It stops short of hosting and forms, and of SEO and accessibility, plus the maintenance nobody wants to do. We wrote about that separately: can ChatGPT build a website.
Each of these is a valid way to start. None of them is a way to own a business website without doing the last 20% yourself.
How to judge a quote in one call
Ask the designer to walk you through a live site they built, on a phone, and explain one decision they made for that client’s business. Then ask what they would change about it today.
A designer who answers both has done the work and thought about it since. One who only shows screenshots is selling images, not websites. The designer vs freelancer vs agency comparison covers how the three options differ on accountability.
