Short answer: if customers search for what you sell, yes. If they only ever arrive through one marketplace or one person’s referral, you can wait. Spending ₹7,999 on a website before you have proof to put on it is the wrong order.
We get this question every week from Bangalore businesses, usually phrased as “we already have Instagram, why do we need a site?” Here is when the answer is yes, when it is no, and what the cheapest version that actually works looks like.
The four questions
Work through all four. Three yeses means you need a website this year.
- Do strangers search for what you sell? “Fabrication company near Peenya”, “interior designer Whitefield”, “website development Bangalore”. If people type it into Google, they need a page to land on. If nobody ever searches it, a site will not create that demand.
- Is one customer worth more than the site? If your average job is ₹40,000, a ₹8,999 site pays for itself on the first enquiry. If your average sale is ₹400, you need a different channel first.
- Do you have proof worth showing? Completed work, photographs, client names, specifications. A site with no proof is a business card with extra steps.
- Can you answer an enquiry within a day? A website that produces leads you never reply to is a cost, not an asset.
What Instagram, WhatsApp, and Google Business Profile actually give you
All three are worth having. None of them is a website, and the reason is ownership.
| Channel | Who controls it | Good at | Cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta’s algorithm | Reach, personality, work-in-progress | Rank in Google, hold specifications, survive suspension | |
| WhatsApp Business | Your number, their platform | Closing a conversation already started | Start a conversation with a stranger |
| Google Business Profile | Google’s listing, your account | Local map visibility, reviews, hours | Carry more than one page of information |
| Your website | You, once the code is handed over | Search, proof, price, specification, one action | Bring its own traffic without content |
A Google Business Profile is the cheapest thing you can do and you should do it first, but it is also a listing on someone else’s property, which Google can suspend, merge, or reorder without asking you. Your site is the only page where you decide the order of information.
When a website is the wrong next spend
Need a website built properly?
Fast, modern, fully owned — from ₹7,999, delivered in 1–2 weeks.
Chat on WhatsAppSee pricing- You sell only through Amazon, Flipkart, or a marketplace. The marketplace owns the customer. A site can wait until you have a brand people search by name.
- You are pre-revenue with no proof. Build the profile, collect ten reviews, photograph the work. Then build the site, with something to say.
- Your entire pipeline is one or two referral sources and you cannot serve more. Fix capacity first. A site that generates work you cannot deliver is a reputation problem.
- You need a page next week for one event. A free one-pager or a social post does that. Do not commission a website under deadline pressure.
None of these is permanent. They are sequencing decisions, not verdicts.
What not having a website actually costs
Traffic is not the loss you feel. The loss is the moment a buyer checks you exist.
A manufacturer gets your number from a colleague. Before replying, they type your company name into Google. If the first result is a Justdial listing with an old phone number, or an Instagram profile with no prices, the comparison happens without you, and you never learn it happened.
The same pattern repeats for a clinic, an interior firm, a fabricator, and a tuition centre. The buyer is not deciding whether you are good. They are deciding whether you are real, and whether replying to you is worth their time.
The cheapest version that works
You do not need twelve pages. You need one page that answers the questions a buyer has before they call:
- What you do, in the words customers use
- Who you do it for, and where
- A starting price or a package
- Three pieces of proof, with photographs
- Your address, service area, and hours
- One tap to WhatsApp and one working enquiry form
That is our ₹7,999 Launch package: one page, mobile-first, hosted on Cloudflare, source code yours at launch, with hosting that costs nothing at normal traffic and a domain that renews yearly at cost. Full breakdown on pricing.
If you would rather build it yourself, that is a legitimate option too. We wrote about where AI-generated pages stop being enough in can ChatGPT build a website.
What a website does that nothing else does
Three things, and they are the reason the answer is usually yes:
- It is findable in the moment of decision. A page with the service, the city, and the proof appears when a stranger searches. Instagram posts do not rank for those searches.
- It holds detail. Specifications, tolerances, materials, certifications, payment schedule, service area, price bands. No bio, no post, and no WhatsApp message holds a specification sheet.
- It is yours. Domain in your name, repository handed over, hosting under your account. No algorithm change, suspension, or platform price rise takes it away.
For a manufacturer, that detail is the product: see how Samsruthi Equip lists 27 products with a specification and an enquiry button on each. For a local business, the same structure works at four pages. The pattern is in small business websites.
If you do build one, build it once
The common mistake is building three: a template site, then a “proper” one, then a rebuild because the template could not grow. Each rebuild costs the launch price again.
Pick the type first, because twelve types of websites names each one. Then check what a website costs in India and how designers, freelancers, and agencies differ. Those three pages will save you more than any discount you negotiate.
The answer, condensed
If people search for your service and one customer is worth more than a phone, you need a website. Build the smallest one that shows your work and takes an enquiry, own the code, and add pages as you earn them.
If you are not there yet, do the free things first: Google Business Profile, ten reviews, photographs of real work. Then come back.
Either way, you can send us the URL of what you have and we will tell you what it needs, including “nothing yet”.
